SMARTIE goal-setting can help achieve more equitable outcomes for marginalized communities. The SMARTIE framework calls on leaders to share power, shrinks disparities, and meaningfully include marginalized staff and communities in the goal-setting process.

SMARTIE Goals Examples

This toolkit provides sample goals for common areas in nonprofit, public sector, and education equity organizations. We share sample goals for:

  • Advocacy, Organizing, and Policy Change
  • Community Impact
  • Culture
  • Development and Fundraising
  • Information Technology
  • Office Administration and Finance
  • Operations and HR
  • Staff Recruitment, Retention, and Experience
  • Strategic Communications and Digital Strategy

Depending on the size of your organization and the scope of your work, these examples can become organizational goals or team goals. They can also be scaled appropriately to serve as individual goals.
