Finishing Strong: Practices to End Well and Learn From This SY!
Can you believe the last 6 weeks of the 2021 School Year are within view?
If you’re like many of the leaders we work with, you’re navigating the desire to maximize what’s left of the school year and the reality that your team (and students) are setting their eyes on summer.
Here’s our advice for you as you seek to make the most of the next few months with your team:
Reprioritize to do less, but better.
Rather than push through and try to do it all, now is the time to zero in on the 1-3 goals for the remainder of the school year. Even if you aren’t on a school-year schedule, take this opportunity to reemphasize what the focus is and empower team members to work with their managers on “stop doing” or “pause for now” lists to allow for refined focus on key goals.
Develop an end-of-year project plan and timeline, share it often, and keep it current.
Make sure everyone on the team understands the path and milestones as you move through the next six weeks by developing a shared timeline and project plan. Track progress against that plan with leaders weekly, and ask them to roll that practice down to their teams.
Tip: It’s sometimes helpful to set a theme for the key phases or weeks, so everyone knows what’s priority when.
Build in time and mechanisms for reflection and learning.
The best time to reflect on the school year is as it’s happening; the second best time is right now. Ask teams and individuals to reflect on what went well, what didn’t, and what lessons they’d like to take to the 2022 School Year. Save those documents, and put time on the calendar to revisit later.
