For Managers: Black, Indigenous, and People of Color Cohorts

BIPOC Cohorts for Managers will be offered exclusively online in 2024.

Managers who are Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) face specific issues within their organizations that result from racism, classism, sexism, and other forms of oppression. We’ve designed two courses to support BIPOC managers in social justice and educational equity organizations. Together, we will share practices that can help managers of color thrive.

Managing to Change the World, 101 Edition: Black, Indigenous, and People of Color Cohort

This is a version of Managing to Change the World, specifically for BIPOC managers. There is no prerequisite course to attend.

In addition to the management tools and best practices we cover in Managing to Change the World, we take extra time to discuss navigating race, identity, and power dynamics within our organizations as managers of color. In this training, you’ll learn how to:

  • Check your own biases and level the playing field for marginalized staff
  • Delegate projects and responsibilities effectively
  • Stay engaged without micromanaging
  • Nurture relationships and belonging on your team
  • Give actionable feedback and develop your staff
  • Address performance problems equitably and manage people out
  • Use clear roles to hand off big responsibilities
  • Direct work with SMARTIE goals
  • Work more effectively with your own manager, and advocate for yourself and your work
  • Recognize the impact of internalized oppression and practice effective ways to show up as your authentic self

The 101 Edition runs for three consecutive, 6-hour days.

To apply for either cohort:

We're invested in building a group that can learn from and grow with each other, so we require a brief application.

You should apply if all the following are true:

  • You’re interested in connecting around issues faced by managers who identify as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color in social justice and educational equity organizations.
  • You’re managing staff within a social justice organization (an organization doing advocacy, organizing, educational equity, and/or policy work to further progressive values in our country).
  • You want to become even better at managing a diverse team to achieve outstanding results.
  • You’re thinking about the impact of racial equity and inclusion as a manager.

We will prioritize participants from organizations that do advocacy, organizing, educational equity, and/or policy work, and strive to build a cohort that is diverse in identity, background, and organizational/team size. We’ll also be looking at your desire to use management as a lever for achieving equity, sustainability, and results, and your openness to learning new skills and practices. We select participants on a rolling basis for each cohort.

Live transcription is enabled for every online training. Additional accommodations are available on request. Please share your access needs when you register and review our Accessibility FAQs.
