We know that managers who are people of color and/or indigenous often face unique issues within their organizations while navigating the intersections of race, class, gender and other identities. So, we’ve designed two management training courses to create a space to discuss and offer support around the challenges of being a manager of color in progressive and social justice organizations, and to share practices that can help managers of color thrive.
Managing to Change the World, 101 Edition: 3-Day People of Color & Indigenous Cohort
If you’re a newer manager and have never attended one of our Management Crash Courses, this 3-day People of Color & Indigenous Cohort is for you!
We’ll cover all of the management tools and best practices that we include in our regular 2-day Crash Course, with extra time built in for discussion about navigating race, identity, and power dynamics within our organizations for managers of color. In this 3-day training, you’ll learn how to:
- Delegate tasks effectively
- Level the playing field for marginalized staff using management choice points
- Use goals to hand off broad responsibilities
- Check in with your staff efficiently
- Strategically manage up to your boss and colleagues to advocate for you and your work
- Prioritize your time, even when you have an overflowing plate
- Hire (and keep) great people
- Use tools to lessen the impact of unconscious bias in how we evaluate others
- Share and receive feedback to foster trust, learning, connection, and accountability
- Resolve performance problems and know when it’s time to manage people out
- Recognize the impact of internalized oppression and practice effective ways to show up as your authentic self
- Incorporate an equity and inclusion lens in applying the management practices above

Managing to Change the World, 201 Edition: 2-Day People of Color & Indigenous Cohort
If you have already attended one of our 1- or 2-day trainings, and want to discuss issues around being a manager of color and around organizational-level policy and practice more broadly, join us for the 201 Edition.
We’ll do brief refreshers on management best practices and spend the balance of time going in-depth on the nuances of management, equity, and inclusion and what it takes to for our organizations to get outstanding results. In this 2-day, 201 training, we’ll cover:
- Different approaches to effectively delegate ownership of tasks, roles, and goals with a lens on equity and inclusion
- Creating decision-making opportunities that level the playing field for marginalized staff
- Using inclusive processes to foster engagement, feedback, and buy-in from those most impacted by decisions
- Hiring (and keeping) great people with an emphasis on mitigating the unconscious bias always present in evaluation
- Being a better advocate of shifting the status quo on equity and inclusion within your organization
- Recognizing the impact of internalized oppression and practicing effective ways to show up as your authentic self
- Sharing and receiving feedback to foster trust, learning, connection, and accountability

This course is specially designed for managers working in school, school district, and educational settings.
If you have already attended one of our 1- or 2-day trainings, and want to discuss issues around being a manager of color and around organizational-level policy and practice more broadly, join us for the 201 Edition.

To Attend:
We're invested in building a group that can learn from and grow with each other during these trainings, and to build this unique group we require a brief application.
You should apply if two or more of the following are true:
- You’re interested in connecting over issues faced by managers who identify as people of color in progressive and social justice organizations.
- You’re managing staff within a social justice organization (an organization doing advocacy, organizing, educational equity, and/or policy work to further progressive values in our country).
- You want to become even better at managing a diverse team to achieve outstanding results.
- You’re thinking about the impact of racial equity and inclusion as a manager.
We’ll decide based on the following criteria:
- Desire to use management as a lever to achieve even better results;
- Openness to adopting new practices and learning new skills;
- Diversity of identity and background; and,
- Diversity of types of organization represented (size, focus of work, etc.).
We will also prioritize participants from organizations that are doing advocacy, organizing, educational equity, and/or policy work.
We will select participants on a rolling basis.
